D.c. and r.f. (reactive) magnetron sputtering of ZnO:Al films from metallic and ceramic targets: a comparative study

SURF Al-doped Zn-O (ZnO:Al) layers, deposited by sputtering, are widely used as transparent and conductive electrodes, esp. as window and contact layers for thin film solar cells. For magnetron sputtering deposition both, reactive sputtering (d.c. and r.f.) from metallic target (Zn:Al 2 wt%) as well as r.f. sputtering from ceramic targets (ZnO:Al/ZnO:alumina are used. Aim is to study influence of discharge parameters on ZnO: Al film and heterojunction properties and correlate properties with plasma parameters and conditions at target surface during sputtering. R.f. sputtering from metallic target yields ZnO:Al films with lowest resistivity (6.4 x 10E-4 ohm.cm) and highest optical transmission. But with respect to all requirements (resistivity, transmission, deposition rate and radiation damage, technological feasibility) for technological process for thin film solar cell windows, sputtering from metallic Zn:Al target in d.c. mode gives best ZnO:Al layers.

D.c. arc plasma deposition of smooth nanocrystalline diamond films

DIAM Reports on CVD growth of nanocrystalline (grain size 30-50 nm) diamond films of 100 nm to 2 µm thickness in methane-rich mixtures. D.c. arc discharge in CH4-H2-Ar gas mixtures with CH4/(CH4 + H2) 10-100% was used for diamond deposition on Si substrates seeded with ultrafine (5 nm) diamond particles. Remarkably well-crystallised diamond films were produced even in H2-free gas mixtures. Raman spectra confirmed nanocrystalline structure of all films examined. Hardness measured with a nanoindenter was in range 70-85 GPa typical for diamond, highest values corresponding to 100% methane content. Films were very smooth with surface roughness R(a) < 20 nm. Essential improvement in surface smoothness was obtained by laser-induced disintegration of coalesced seeding particles.

D.c. diode ion nitriding behaviour of titanium and Ti-6Al-4V

Relevancy:  

By adjusting nitriding temp. and N2 partial pressure, surface layers grown on Ti and Ti-6Al-4V were characterised to reveal propagation of each layer. Ion nitriding was carried out in d.c. glow discharge. Results show that Al segregated layer forming between compound layer and diffusion layer hinders diffusion of N toward core of Ti-6Al-4V and reduces growth rate of compound layer without affecting diffusion layer thickness. Change in plasma conditions such as hydrogen gas concn. can only effect nitrided compound layer. Most efficient ionisation occurs at H2 gas concn. of 17.5%. Activation energy measured is lower than those obtained at higher nitriding temp. believed due to changes in diffusion path affected by compound layer texture and internal stress.
