Talks on micro-engineering & microstructures, new coatings, often ternary alloys, for automotive bearings and tribological surfaces. Multilayer magnetic coatings, based on carbon & copper in 5 nm thicknesses, or permalloy, copper cobalt manganese iron (giant magnetoresistance) & use of pulse plating, and applications for magnetic field sensors. Electrochemical processes used in production of new generation passive electronic components; solderable & bondable surfaces for fine pitch printed circuit board mounting; lead-free solders and EU legislation on electronic scrap.

22 Volt chromic acid aluminium anodising

Relevancy:

Lists high strength, heat-treatable Al alloys and describes history of Cr anodising, the Bengough Stuart process. Graphs show effects of voltage run-up (programming) in current density. Figs show effect of oxide thickness on current density at 20 to 40 V, 90 to 100°F. Full & partial sealing are discussed incl. salt spray corrosion. 5 refs

22nd Hothersall Memorial Lecture

Relevancy:

Author surveys his own past scientific activities, incl. studies on electropolishing of aluminium; electrodeposition of nickel & chromium. Table lists various Ni + Cr layer combinations & their corrosion resistance to a range of tests. Internal stress in chromium plate is examined, with graphs showing examples. Metallising of plastics is reviewed, incl. comparison of various adhesion test methods. Metallised ABS performance in corrosion tests, thermal cycling & peel tests are tabuled. For difficult-to-plate metals, some zincate results are shown. Comments on electroplated coatings for wear resistance on hot and cold metal-working tools, brush plating & ion implantation of steel. Sapphire fatigue tests on plated bearings are detailed. 42 refs

22nd Int'l Conference on Metallurgical Coatings & Thin Films. Report. Part 1.

Relevancy:

10 main themes incl. coatings for high temperature applications, hard coatings & gas-phase coatings (vacuum, PVD, CVD). Tables summarise these, esp. carbides, nitrides etc.

22nd William Blum Lecture - Don't Believe Everything You Hear

Relevancy:

Author reviews some of his work incl. electropolishing using grooves from a gramophone record to assess "throwing power". Pot'l distribution lines are also plottted. Some comments on crack-free Cr and the story of alk. battery electrodes based on perforated Ni foil.

23rd Symposium on powder coating

Relevancy:

Report on German symposium held in Dresden where topics included pre-treatment, noting that this is tending to become ever more complex. A new horizontal air exhaust (extraction) system was described. The benefits of low-cost digital microscopy for surface analysis was noted. As well as new coating plants, the scope of retrofitted equipment was discussed. Colour change-over is a persistent problem, some new approaches were described. Powder coating over electro coat paint is a firm favourite and details of this were provided. Some 270 participants were present

23rd Ulm Discussions "Corrosion Protection - What Follows Chromates ?"

Relevancy:

23rd Proceedings of this annual German event, focuses on EU environmental legislation virtually banning use of hexavalent chromium conversion coatings in automobiles & other consumer durables. Successive lectures examine the EU legislation in detail, examine the implications for architectural cladding etc; review post-treatment of electroplated zinc & alloys; incl. sealing; review of zinc-manganese based systems; use of organic coatings loaded with zinc or aluminium metal flake; protection of aluminium components & mixed metal assemblies where galvanic couples can be a problem; coatings for magnesium alloys; use of silanes & SAM (self-assembling molecule based technology); use of nano-composites; electrically conducting polymers. Corrosion protection of thin steel sheet by plasma & other gas-phase processes. Names & addresses of speakers are appended. In German, DM 95.00

24 Karat Gold and Low Karat Electrodeposition

Relevancy:

88 96561 Neth. Pure Au deposits are compared with alloy deposits based on Au-Cu-Cd in terms of electrical contact resistance, wear resistance and solderability and corrosion resistance. Sulphite based baths were used. The alloy is a useful cost-saving approach if a pure gold top coat is used and savings can also be made using undercoats, chemical polishing of basis metal and u/s during dep'n.
