Cadmium Electroplating using Novel Additives.

Relevancy:  

The usefulness of the surfactant V-67 (diethanolamine salt of undcylphosphinic acid) in Cd electroplating is due to its strong adsorption even at high c.ds. and temps. Its effect on the rate of Cd plating was studied with the addn. of gelatin or joiners glue and in some cases Ni2+ to the bath which also contained (NH4)2SO4 and Al2(SO4)3.

PROT Report on 13 different electrolyte compositions incl. Cd sulphates, borofluorides, chlorides, aluminium sulphate, ammonium sulphate, glycocoll, Trilon B (= EDTA) ethylene diamine, thiourea, monoethanolamine, dextrin, glue. Polarisation plots are shown & throwing power (as thickness vs. distance from cathode edge). Best results were found using glycocoll (alpha aminoacetic acid) & Trilon B as well as ammonia Cd complexes. Final solution has throwing power better than acid, almost as good as cyanide baths.8 refs

Cadmium Plating High Tensile 4340 Steel

Relevancy:  

The effect of hydrogen embrittlement on tensile strength of Cd-plated notched and un-notched testpieces is reported with data showing delayed failure. Plots of residual hydrogen in plated &unplated work are shown and the role of heat-treatment is studied. Extended baking time does not restore strength of poorly placed 4340 steel. H content did not correlate with embrittlement and 4340 steel can be safely plated to strengths of 260-280 k.s. i. 7 refs.
