Eco-Friendly painting

Relevancy:

Note with statistics on measures adopted by German organic coaters etc to minimise environmental impact, incl. sorting of solid wastes, avoidance, effluent treatment etc.

Eco-friendly pickling inhibitors for steel

Relevancy:

Disc'n of inhibitors & their properties with polarisation plots to show these. Focus on caprolactams & their derivatives & acetal alcohols. Numerous isotherms are shown, tables & graphs show corrosion inhibition effects & pickling rates. Polyaniline in water dispersion is also examined with isotherm data, SEM's of PA particles, corrosion data etc. Multiblock copolymers with ethylene & propylene oxide are likewise examined. 92 refs

Eco-friendly primer painting of plastics

Relevancy:

Thanks to the introduction of EU legislation restricting use of solvents, SME's too now have to cope with the problems this causes. Primer painting of plastics traditionally used solvent based paints. Now a new water-soluble 2-pack epoxy can meet this requirement. The requirements for such a coating are listed and the background thinking underlying its development is shown.Table lists previous water-based primers, their binders, advantages and drawbacks, with 2nd table showing % content of volatile organics (VOC's) in various paint systems. A long table defines the new 2-pack hydro-epoxy primer listing key properties & parameters.

Eco-friendly soldering & bonding: interconnection methods for electronics

Relevancy:

Anticipates the year 2004 when the EU will ban use of lead in solder and use of solvents. Tin copper or tin silver are candidate replacements, albeit with higher melting points and the implications for components etc. Conductive polymers may be a more attractive option. Solvent-free, not requiring elevated temperatures and cost-effective, they have many other attractive attributes, discussed in the article.

Eco-friendly surface modification

Relevancy:

Use of plasma-enhanced processes allows wide variety of films to be deposited from ionic or molecular sources or polymer surfaces to be modified, e.g with electrons. Examples include ink reservoirs for ballpoint pens which can be processed in a small and convenient unit.

Eco-Friendly Surface Treatment for Stainless Steel.

Relevancy:

Polishing and coloring of stainless steel with no chromic acid and at low temperature is discussed, and methods for this are reviewed. Some typical formulae for polishing and coloring are cited. The characteristics of the different formulae were discussed, and a technological formula with good comprehensive performances was obtained. .

Eco-friendly trivalent chromium sulfate electroplating process.

Relevancy:

Eco-friendly trivalent chromium sulfate electroplating process was studied. The process specifications were introduced, and influences of temperature, pH value, time and trivalent chromium mass concentration on the deposition rate and coating morphology were also investigated. It was found that the bath has excellent polarization ability and covering power. The current efficiency was 8.93%, and the deposition rate was up to 0.06 µm/min. Furthermore, the coating obtained with smooth and bright surface, and uniform thickness.

Eco-friendly, energy efficient phosphate passivation process for mild steel substrates

Relevancy:

Process is discussed in which solvent and hot alkaline degreasing processes are replaced by cold surfactant degreasing process. Phosphating is discussed in detail.

Eco-profit in electroplating

Relevancy:

Author argues that recycling, water recovery etc need not imply extra operating costs, rather the reverse. Vacuum evaporators, externally regeneratable ion-exchanger are part of the scheme. Graph shows effluent & waste costs decreasing as staffing costs increase.

Eco-rinsing

Relevancy:

Author comments that method known as "Eco-rinsing" is simple but effective, yet apparently almost unknown outside a few German users. An extra tank is used to recover dragged-out species and there appear to be no disadvantages other than more complex work movement (transporter programming) and perhaps a slight decrease in maximum amount of work throughput. Concept is explained in detail, sketches show tank layout and flow movement.

Ecoclean seminar on cleanliness testing

Relevancy:

Summary of title seminar with comments on standardised tests used in the automotive sector, noting pressure on cleaning machine mfrs to adopt these. Also the role of VOC guidelines where solvent cleaning is involved.

Ecofriendly surface treatment for automobile parts.

Relevancy:

Ecolam powder painting of coil aluminium.

Relevancy:

Tests incl. thickness, Bucholtz hardness, impact, cupping, bonding salt spray and UV exposure are reported (to specified European or ISO standards) for Ecolam, polyester powder & polyester liquid paint. A range of typical applications are listed. Plant to manufacture coated coil is described, as is the product (yellow chromated), and a brief comment on environmental impact is added.. Photos show outcome of tests listed above, profile of coating line is shown.

Ecological & cost-effective surface treatment of aluminium

Relevancy:

"Visit" to Messrs Stark-Eloxal in Lottstetten, Germany shows premises, describes Quality Management & Environmental Management.
