Galvanic Series for Thin Film Metallisations & Barrier Layers Used in Microelectronics Industry

JES Galvanic series was developed for a range of thin-film metallisations & barrier layers deposited over oxidised Si substrates. Series is based on open-circuit potentials of various couples (barrier-layer & metal) as meas'd in 2000 ppm ammonium chloride. Ranking is intended as guide to minimise corrosion in device manufacture. 4 main differences that impact on anticorrosive performance of batch galvanised steel as compared to continuously galvanised steel. Coating thickness (batch galvanised items have coating thickness 3 times that of continuously galvanised). Another is coating hardness. Batch galvanised items have much thicker Zn-Fe alloy layers which provides 5 times abrasion resistance of continuously galvanised coatings. Continuously galvanised coatings are more flexible. Batch galvanised coatings apply uniform heavy coating to internal and external surfaces, edges and cavities whilst continuously galvanised coatings have exposed bare steel at cut edges, and continuously galvanised hollow sections may be fully galvanised only on external surfaces. Coating mass on batch galvanised products is 3-5 times higher compared to continuously galvanised coatings.

Galvanised steel lamp posts and electricity transmission towers last longer because of drop in sulphur dioxide emissions over past few years. Trade association has produced map of corrosion of galvanised steel in UK. Overall, corrosion of towers is of level of 20 years ago. Steel with 85µm coating will last 60 years.
