Hannover Messe 2000

Relevancy:

Overview of this major event, though attendances continue to fall, 1998-2000, as do exhibitor numbers and floor area. Website www.hannover-messe.de gives details. Surface finishing had 600 exhibitors, 16,000 sq. meter floorspace. Highlights are detailed in mechanical pretreatment, cleaning, degreasing, plasma pretreatment. Note is made of the "umbrella" Surface Preparation Group created by USF. Special details of ultrasonic cleaning equipment. To be cont'd.

"stainless steel look" chromate-free finish, electroforming, metallising of plastics, incl. exotic polymers and new approach to plastics activation from enthone-OMI. Use of tin on metallising plastics, high-speed chromium plating on continuous line basis, selective electroless gold plating, black chromium finishes, electroplated aluminium incl. for mirrors. Anodising of aluminium with simultaneous impregnation of polmers deep into the pores. Anodising of magnesium in aqueous + plasma conditions. To be cont'd.

Hannover Show - Verdicts. Pt 1.

Relevancy:

The entire issue is devoted to retrospective of the major Hannover Show, various trade bodies give their verdict, focusing esp. on prospects for the German paint industry. However criticisms were made of the Show itself, where visitor numbers declined and several exhibitors have yet to decide whether they will attend the 2002 event. A review of the wet painting sector suggests that this remains lively & vigorous. Specially noted are spray gun cleaning systems, new filtration equipment, and use of clamps in place of hooks for suspending work to be painted, so obviating the need for a hole to exist. Advances in conveyers. In the powder coating section, somewhat fewer exhibitors than in the past, with emphasis on simpler plants and high-value coatings. A new gun where the paint cloud is adjustable was shown. Radiation cured powders were much in view. The electroplating section focused on chromate free conversion coatings, new plastics metallising processes, saving of water & energy. Micro-engineering is seen as a promising growth area.

Hannover Show - Verdicts. Pt 2.

Relevancy:

Pt 2 on an entire issue devoted to Show retrospective. The DEV which acts as umbrella for all German vitreous enamellers & supporting activities had a stand notably smaller than in the past. The cost-effectiveness &application of vitreous enamel was the keynote. One novelty was luminescent enamel, which after a few minutes exposure to light, can glow for up to 20 hrs. Cleaning machinery & processes were heavily represented, and cleaning & stripping of paint jigs by various means, was shown. Ultrasonic enhancement was strongly featured. Blasting, esp. when automated, continues to grow because of environmental benefits. New blast media and new methods of process control were shown. Laser surface treatment and cleaning was characterised by a drop in entry-level investment costs, a complete laser cleaning unit was priced at DM 199,000. A new patented blast head promises 4-fold increase in capacity. Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) blasting is gaining strength. In the instrument section, units capable of resolving duplex coatings, function setting by keypad as with cellphone and unit with no function keys. Pore detection in non-conductive coatings was shown, using dc, resolving defects invisible to the naked eye. New surface roughness instruments, high speed contact angle meas't & surface colour meas't units were also shown, as was oven temperature measurement. Finally, the conveyor & handling section, showing general and dedicated overhead & floor-standing units, with rope and chain hoists.

Hannover Show, 2000. Pt 3

Relevancy:

Details of this major German event, Pt 3 focuses on plant, barrel automatics, 3-dimensional work movement in plating tanks, zero discharge plating, rectifiers &electrical control gear and cabling and electrical feed & contacts. Pumps of various types. Process control, incl. an electronic "Hull cell" for zinc plating, X-ray fluorescence, hardness meas't of very thin films; thickness meas't incl ultrasonics for thickest films. Surface energy by contact angle or tensiometer. Electrocoat painting, near infra-reddrying, cold drying of paint films, UV cured paints. Cyanide destruction with hydrogen peroxide (free CN) and UV (complexed CN). Vacuum distillation for zero discharge. Plasma plants & surface treatment processes. Chillers and refrigeration plants, oil skimmers. Electrolytic metal recovery, laser surface treatments plant; electrodeposited composites with micro-capsules. Nanogate anti-adhesion (nonstick) coatings.

Hansen solubility parameters. A user's handbook. 2nd Ed'n.

Relevancy:

ISBN 978-0-8493-7248-3 2nd Ed'n of book first published in 2000 features the three Hansen solubility parameters for over 1200 chemicals, and correlations for over 400 materials including polymers, inorganic salts, and biological materials. It includes contributions from five experts, who share their work, theories, and practical applications involving Hansen solubility parameters. The new discussions include a new statistical thermodynamics approach for confirming existing Hansen solubility parameters and how they fit into other thermodynamic theories for polymer solutions. New chapters examine the prediction of environmental stress cracking as well as absorption and diffusion in polymers. The treatment of biological materials includes skin tissue, proteins, natural fibres, and cholesterol, and highlights recent findings on interactions with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The book also covers the latest applications of Hansen solubility parameters, such as ozone-safe 'designer' solvents, protective clothing, drug delivery systems, and petroleum applications. The book concludes with a detailed discussion on the necessary research, future directions, and potential applications for which Hansen solubility parameters are able to provide a useful means of prediction in areas such as biological materials, controlled release applications, nanotechnology, and self-assembly.
