Ice Blasting: New Technology for Austrialia.

The environmentally-friendly technique of ice blasting for precision stripping of coatings and contaminants is discussed. Small ice particles have special properties that may be optimised to effect critical cleaning without the use of chemical solvents or surfactants. Ice particles have properties ranging from the softness of snow to the hardness of ice. Example are provided.

Icephobic surfaces with titania nanotubes

The build-up of ice (icing-up) on aircraft wings is a perennial problem. Wind turbine blades and high-voltage overhead lines are also challenged by this. A coating based on titanium dioxide nanotubes is shown to reduce icing by up to 53%. Titanium is anodised at 20 V in a fluoride electrolyte to create nanotubes. SEM photos show surface and cross-section. XPS spectra show depth profiles. The surface is characterised by a very high water contact angle >150º and contact angle hysteresis <10º being thus superhydrophobic. Photos show and icing and de-icing cycle. 7 refs
