Kinetic studies on electrochemical stripping of CrN films.

SURF Chromium nitride (CrN) films deposited on silicon substrates by a cathodic arc plasma technique were electrochemically stripped off in KOH alkaline electrolytes. Current densities and electrolyte concentrations were varied to investigate their influences on the stripping process. By analyzing the relation between the potential and reaction time, it is possible to determine the optimal time for terminating the stripping process because of the different resistivities of the substrates and overlayers. The critical stripping times were defined from the potential-time relation and were observed to be inversely proportional to the current density. The total required charge/unit volume was also determined. The relationship between the thickness of the residual films after stripping and the reaction time at various current densities and KOH concentrations was analyzed using a kinetic model. Moreover, CrN films deposited by another method, namely, unbalanced magnetron sputtering, were also tested for comparison. The stripping process was apparently influenced by the microstructure of the films.

The factors affecting the rate of electroless Cu-Ni alloy deposition on polyester fabric surface were preliminarily discussed based on kinetic method. The effects of constituents in plating bath such as copper and nickel ions, sodium hypophosphite, sodium citrate, and boric acid, as well as temperature and pH on the deposition rate were studied. The activation energy, reaction orders, reaction rate constant, and kinetic equation were determined. The results have some significance for production practice.

Kinetic Study on the Electrodeposition of Cadmium with the Presence of Organic Agents in Sulfate Solutions.

MCP The electrodeposition of cadmium is studied by electrochemical techniques in the presence of the organic agents. Cyclic voltammetry results clearly show that the electrodeposition of cadmium is a diffusion-controlled process associated with a typical nucleation process. With addition of the thiourea, 3-Picolin and benzyl alcohol organic agents simultaneously in sulfate solution, the redox potential of cadmium is shifted to more negative potentials. In this case, the current transients reveal an instantaneous nucleation with a typical three-dimensional (3D) growth mechanism, while it shows progressive nucleation mechanism without the ternary-species organic agents. In these conditions, the fine-grained deposits with a large number of equally sized hexagonal grains are observed.
