Laboratory testing of in-service performance parameters of internal pipe coatings

Relevancy:  

Internal pipe coatings are often damaged by field operating conditions and handling procedures. Laboratory comparisons have shown that some internal coatings are surprisingly intolerant of wireline abrasion, rapid depressurization, and external pipe dents. Samples used for tests were supplied by applicators and are from typical production runs.

Laboratory testing of surface-tolerant coatings for protective maintenance of steel structures

Epoxy surface-tolerant coatings were assessed in multi-coat or high- build single coat systems by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, adhesion tests and accelerated ageing. Water-borne acrylic systems were also evaluated. Substrates were prerusted or prepainted steel, latter being subjected to accelerated ageing and surface preparation.

LABS - Dreaded by every coater

LABS is an acronym (Lackbenetzungsstoerende Substanzen) substances which prevent wetting by the applied paint or powder coating, such as grease from ball-bearings. The Fraunhofer Institute seeks to create a methodology for determining when such conditions exist, a very common cause of defects. Labyrinth Gas Feed Apparatus and Method for a Detonation Gun

Relevancy:  

A gas feed system for detonation gun apparatus having a labyrinth shaped gas path. The labyrinth is positioned between the fuel and oxygen supply and the combustion chamber of a detonation gun. The labyrinth allows the fuel and oxygen supply to flow into the combustion and precludes and migration of the detonation wave front into the fuel supply by destroying that portion of the detonation wave front that enters the labyrinth. Labyrinth gas feed system increases safety, reliability and productivity of the detonation coating process.

Lacquer Adhesion to Mechanically Treated & Conversion Coated Aluminium Surfaces

Lacquer adhesion to mechanically treated and conversion coated aluminium surfaces

Effects of surface pretreatment of Al on adhesion of chlorinated rubber lacquer have been examined using relatively novel technique for direct generation and propagation of blister near interfact between lacquer and substrate. Assessment of controlled growth of blister allows differentiation of poor performance of mechanically treated substrate compared with chromate conversion procedure, believed to result from poor wetting of mechanically treated believed to result from poor wetting of mechanically treated adhered by lacquer. Additionally, immersion of the lacquered substrates in NaCl soln. for 8 days caused further marked deterioration of performance of mechanically treated and coated substrate, which resulted from moisture uptake, through lacquer to metal surface, disrupting bonding. Conversely,chromate-conversion coated substrate appeared to improve after immersion in NaCl soln. Reasons for behaviour remain unclear, but in situations of good adhesion, tests may be influenced by changes in mechanical properties of lacquer coating.
