Magnesium as a material of construction ? Corrosion need not be a problem

Magnesium is prone to corrosion in part because it is intrinsically a reactive metal, but also because of impurities which can be present. The manner in which these occur (during metallurgical processing) is explained, as are means for minimising their incidence., e.g by lowering casting temperatures. Conversion coatings based on phosphate-permanganate are an alternative to chromate, and manganese-based and "Anomag" (anodised) finishes are also noted.
