Nano-particle coating for magnesium

Glassy coatings are based on silica (85%) and boron oxide (10%) and phosphorus pentoxide (5%) mixed oxide nanoparticles, ca 200nm diameter. Dynamic light-scattering plot shows particle size growth after 1, 20 & 44hrs in terms of fraction of the whole as size distribution. Coating is applied from aq. sol'n & dried to form a solid but porous coating. Further drying & sintering gives a dense deposit. Dilatometric plots show coefficient of thermal expansion, 0 to 1200°C. SEM & AFM images & cross-sections are shown. Coating can be applied by immersion, brushing or electrocoating. EIS spectrum shows corrosion behaviour in 0.05M Na sulphate for coatings applied by different methods. 10 refs

Nano-particle protective coating for magnesium

A wholly inorganic, silicate-based coating offers excellent thermal & mechanical stability. Feedstock is ca 200nm particulates 85% silica, 10% borax, bal. phosphorus pentoxide. In sol-gel type of process, these are applied to Mg surface & dried, to form a porous coating which is then sintered to form a dense glassy coating. Dilatometric plots show the contraction of various oxide mixtures. Light-scattering is used to follow particle growth. Coating can be applied by brushing or immersion. SEM & AFM images of surfaces & cross-sections are shown. Use of polydiethoxysiloxane improves adhesion. Corrosion protection is indicated by EIS impedance meas'ts (graphs). 10 refs
