Obituary, Sir Michael Clapham

Obituary (2nd December) of distinguished UK industrialist, noting his development of photo-etching of stainless steel using a dot-patterned photographic film, the pattern then being printed onto the stainless steel. After etching. this left a pattern of invisibly small protrusions. This was then used as a mandrel for copper electroforming where the protrusions left a corresponding pattern of minute holes, into which ink could lodge, thereby allowing printing (photogravure). The concept was later adapted in World War II, for production of gas diffusion membranes for uranium isotope separation, in the atomic bomb project.

At least one aspect associated with the object plating is monitored to determine the amount of at least one by product created during the plating and/or the reduction in the amount of at least one plating component. Based on this monitored aspect, an adjustment is made to the flow rate of substances added to a plating cell and/or the flow rate of used plating substances drained from the plating cell. The used plating substances are purified to remove at least some of the by-product and then the purified plating substances are combined with at least one component before passing back into the plating cell to reuse at least some of the plating substances. Objects, in particular, made from glass or glass ceramic, comprising a double coating to facilitate cleaning thereof. A coating which meets the test conditions developed for interior oven glazing may be achieved, by means of a duplex coating with an outer layer, comprising components reacting with free OH groups and an inner inorganic metal oxide layer, whereby the outer hydrophobic layer is applied on a very reactive inner metal oxide layer, dried at moderate temperatures of up to 100°C and chemically anchored thereto by condensation reactions and the double layer system then burned onto the surfaces of the object at temperatures above 50°C. Said method is carried out with the following steps: application of an inner inorganic sol-gel layer, directly to the surfaces of the object with conventional techniques in a first step, drying the inner sol-gel layer at a temperature between ambient and 100°C, application of an outer hydrophobic, preferably fluoro compound to the reactive inner sol-gel layer with a conventional method in a second step and burning the double layer system onto the surfaces of the object.

Measuring instrument (LFEl) providing objective numerical assessment of anodised components is described. Principle of operation is as follows. Part of flat surface of component is wetted with liquid and coated with transparent plate, which almost eliminates effect of various degrees of surface roughness on reflection of light flux. Part of light flux irradiated by light source and passing through optical device consists of brightening component and is returned through diaphragm; other part of flux corresponding to colour or degree of blackness falls on surface of annular photo-element and is measured. Instrument is simple to use and provides objective measurements.
