Radiation-cured powder coating systems

Resins based on unsaturated polyesters & vinylether polyurethane are used in new generation powder formulations. These can be cured at relatively low temperatures of 100 to 150°C, allowing use of heat-sensitive substrates incl. plastics or paper to be powder coated. Infra-red or ultra-violet radiation can be used, the former offers lower temperatures, the latter more rapid curing.

Radiation-induced degradation of coatings

Relevancy:  

Degradative effect of high energy (ionising) radiation from gamma-rays and X-rays as well as corpuscular radiation from energetic nuclear particles on paint films is discussed. Impact of radiation from ground sources on coatings is described together with other possible changes. Radiation-resistant coatings in nuclear power plants is considered.

Radiation-induced redistribution of implanted impurities in Aluminium

Relevancy:  

SURF Ion-beam-induced migration of an implanted impurity is studied using model involving diffusion of impurity, vacancies and coupling between motion. Redistribution of implanted Kr, Fe and Ni in Al is observed. Implantations are carried out at 200 keV, to dose of 1 x 10E16 ions/sq. cm and at 77 K to 473 K. Coupled continuity equations for implanted atom and vacancy fluxes are solved to obtain theoretical fits to concn. vs. depth profiles. Effective diffusion coeff. describing radiation-induced thermal and a thermal processes is obtained from theoretical fits and has value few orders of magnitude higher than normal diffusion coeffs.

Radiation-proof coating systems

6 coatings systems were tested for use on storage containers for radioactive wastes. Coatings must be long term resistant, capable of withstanding extreme stresses, chemically resistant, thermally stable, resistant to radiation and easy to decontaminate. Selected coating systems were irradiated (using cobalt-60) with energy doses of up to 10 MGy and subjected to chemical resistance and decontamination tests. At radiation levels < 0.3 MGy all coating systems could be decontaminated. At > 3 MGy chemical resistance and decontaminability fell. Coating systems were 2-component epoxy and epoxy/polyurethane-polyamine, 1- component polyurethane or 2-component epoxy/polyurethane; 2 epoxy systems involved water-borne coatings.

Radiation-proof paint systems

Storage of radioactive waste demands containers with specific attributes. These are set out, as are the results of a research project where 6 candidate coatings were irradiated up to 10Mgy and tested for their chemical resistance and decontamination. All systems passed these tests, but at higher radiation doses, the properties began to fail

Radiator manufacture calls for high degree of cleaning
