Tailor-made polyurethane powders for high-quality coatings

Polyurethane powder coatings based on blocking agent-free uretdione cross-linkers and resulting in no emissions are examined, considering high-gloss pigmented coatings, powder clear coats, matt powder coatings, anti-graffiti coatings, and weather-stable coatings. Uretdione hardener with elevated isocyanate content and matting hardener with both isocyanate and carboxyl group (permitting two parallel curing reactions) are discussed.

Tailored aluminium oxide layers by bipolar current adjustment in the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process.

SURF The plasma electrolytic oxidation process of aluminium alloys is investigated for two different current waveforms. It is shown that particular conditions may be established which strongly reduce the arcing that usually cause detrimental defects in the oxide layer for treatment time greater than typically 40-50 min. This results in a "softer" process. As a consequence thick homogenous layers may be grown with no large discharge channels. Through the presented results, the importance of the negative charge density relative to the positive one is evidenced thus pointing out the need of using a pulse bipolar current supply.

Tailoring defect structure and optical absorption of porous anodic aluminum oxide membranes.

MCP Defects influence the optical and electronic properties of nanostructured materials that may be relevant for applications. In self-organized anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates we have investigated the effect of annealing, doping and nanoscale metal deposition. Optical absorption spectroscopy has been used as a sensitive probe for the defect density in AAO templates. The electronic spectra are found to be dominated by bands which originate from oxygen-deficient color centers (F+, F and F2). In annealing studies, the integrated absorption of the bands changes non-monotonically with annealing temperature and annealing time. This demonstrates that the concentration of defects can be optimized to tailor the optical properties of the AAO. Metallic Au wires are deposited in the template to establish a plasmonic template or array. The investigations provide an interesting insight into the interplay of reactivity and diffusivity on nanoscales.
