Washability testing for coatings.

Relevancy:

Standards, tests, test equipment, and proprietary equipment are discussed. It is concluded that accelerated test methods for the washability and the resistance to cleaning of paints are described in standard test methods BS EN ISO 11998, ASTM D 2486 and others, and these tests make use of a reciprocal scrubbing motion, as provided by a washability tester. In order to ensure reproducibility for the test results it is recommended that the paint films be applied using a motorised film applicator to ensure an evenly distributed paint film. This method allows the speed of film application to be controlled and repeated so that test samples are consistent from test to test. The use of a doctor blade applicator allows the thickness of the coating to be varied to evaluate the coating system. The washability and cleanability scrub tests described are considered to be good for rating powder coatings, particularly against existing paint formulations with known abrasion resistance. However, it is difficult to correlate accelerated test results with the real-life performance of paint coatings, as it is very difficult to simulate that real life wear conditions that will be experienced by the paint in service.

Washability tests for coatings

Relevancy:

Instrumentation for testing of title properties is described. BS EN ISO 11998 "Paints & varnishes - determination of wet scrub resistance and coating cleanability, and ASTM D 2486 "Standard test method for scrub resistance of wall paints" are cited. DIN 53778 Pt 2 Emulsion paints for interior use; evaluation of cleanability, wash & scrub resistance was superseded by EN ISO 119998 in 2001. Commentary on these standard tests is offered, with abrasion and gloss test instruments also being used.
