Zinc + aluminium and the improved protection of steel strip (Italian)

A coating composed of zinc and aluminium has been demonstrated to be a viable alternative to classic zinc coatings for the protection of strip steel. Modifications to the classic galvanised zinc coating process have been made by the Bergischen Universit"t Wupperthal in collaboration with Ago Verzinkerei GmbH (Neuwied) to produce 95Zn-5Al coatings up to 100 microns thick on steel strip. The coatings, produced by a double dip process, show enhanced ductility, adhesion and corrosion resistance compared with conventional zinc coatings.

Zinc Alloy and Process for Hot-Dip Galvannealing of Steel.

Relevancy:  

Hot-dip galvanising coating alloy composition suitable for galvannealing steel sheet. The addition of 0.02 to 0.11 wt. % Chromium to the alloy allows for an increased aluminium content in the bath, while ensuring a sufficient diffusion of iron into the zinc coating during annealing. This is particularly advantageous for use in coating lines where galvanised and the galvannealed products are manufacturing alternatively. The addition of Cr allows to lower the annealing temperature and to shorten the residence time of the steel in the annealing furnace. Galvannealing dual phase steels, which should be processed at relatively low temperatures, is therefor greatly facilitated.

Zinc alloy coatings for corrosion protection of steel

The coating system Zn-alloy, chromate conversion coating, then sealing meets most requirement of the automotive industry in terms of corrosion, sliding wear and temperature resistance. The latter is a function of deposit structure, where zinc nickel or zinc manganese do not undergo change up to 300°C. The gel-like layer of dispersed silica, which binds water, also plays an important role. Corrosion resistance is linked to corrosion potentials set up, and these in turn reflect corrosion mechanisms & processes. Sliding performance is improved by introducing solid lubricant particles in or close to the passivation layer.

Zinc alloy deposits for the machine tool industry

Zinc plated components in contact with concrete, or wood impregnated with rot protective agents & preservatives can rapidly corrode in certain conditions, e.g retained moisture. Performance of zinc alloys, hot dip galvanised zinc is compared, chromated 1% cobalt zinc alloy proved best in concrete. In treated timber, hot dip zinc 55 aluminium alloy or zinc nickel alloy proved superior.

Finding alternative substitutes for cadmium in the aerospace & automotive industries remains a partly unsolved problem. Since no one coating offers the broad spectrum of properties of Cd, solutions must be adopted on a case-by-case basis. Zinc alloys based on Zn with nickel, cobalt, silver & tin can provide such solutions, esp. when chromated. The processes are briefly summarised, deposit properties are tabulated.
